The right candidate must specialize in building and cultivating strong relationships with local businesses, nonprofits and community stakeholders. This is primarily a commission-based position with generous commission rates and monthly bonuses..



About LocalShops1
LocalShops1 is Tampa Bay’s leading advocate for locally owned, independent businesses. LocalShops1, established in 2008, is comprised of more than 350 local businesses and nonprofits, primarily in Pinellas County. Membership is open to businesses throughout the greater Tampa Bay region. Our mission is to provide support, advocacy and education to local businesses across the Tampa Bay region.  

 

 

Experience + Education

  • Knowledge and understanding of the local business community 
  • An advocate with genuine interest and passion for local businesses and issues that affect them
  • Strong social media presence a plus
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in marketing, journalism, communications, business, or related field preferred
  • Minimum of three years of experience in sales/marketing, with preference given to those with experience working with chambers or business membership-based organizations
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with members, prospects, volunteers and community stakeholders 
  • Experience and success in developing compelling written, oral and visual presentation materials
  • Ability to think creatively and innovatively and follow-through on projects
  • Strong ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Results-oriented and willingness to be accountable for rmeasurable goals
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities at once
  • Driven by and thrives on meeting and exceeding goals and benchmarks

 

Responsibilities

  • Contact, acquire and sell new memberships to businesses in the Tampa Bay region
  • Schedule appointments and personal visits with prospective businesses as well as current members
  •  Achieve budgeted revenue goals
  • Cultivate and maintain in-depth knowledge of all LocalShops1 programs, services, initiatives and activities
  • Closely monitor industry trends and local issues impacting LocalShops1 members and other local businesses
  • Actively support and participate in LocalShops1 events and programs
  • Cultivate relationships with existing members and follow-up with advertising and marketing opportunities
  • Works renewal accounts and targeted major accounts as assigned
  • Help LocalShops1 members take full advantage of their membership, including attending our monthly events; contributing photos/articles or advertising in our publications; and vending, volunteering or sponsoring our events
  • Represent LocalShops1 at community festivals, local fundraisers, and other events
  • Perform other job duties as directed

 

Membership Director Schedule

Please note the following is the minimum time commitment required for the job. 

  • Office hours, 8 hours/month: Two “office hours” each week in our Gulfport office, so members and prospective members may drop in for information on how they can best use LocalShops1 to grow their business.
  • Keep log of members who call or come in and any follow-up that might be needed; if no one comes in during the office hours, use that time on lead-generating and member-retention tasks.
  • Lead-generating, 6-8 hours/month:  Includes cold calls and following up on prospective new members. Invite them to our socials, drop off magazines, etc.
  • Member retention, 6-8 hours/month:  Includes checking in on LocalShops1 members by phone, email or in person, to help them make the most of their membership and to let them know of upcoming events, ad opportunities, etc. Community relations, 8-10 hours/month:  Represent LocalShops1 at networking events, community functions, nonprofit fundraisers, grand openings, etc. Please note that most events will be in south/mid-Pinellas, primarily St. Petersburg or Gulfport, but occasionally you may be assigned to events in Tampa or the Beaches.
  • Monthly social, 7 hours/month:  Includes 3 hours to coordinate the social with host and co-sponsors (if any), one hour to post event on online calendars (news sites, etc), and 3 hours on event day (please arrive before event begins. You will be responsible for setting up check-in desk and signing in guests, taking photos during the event, making sure everything runs smoothly, and breaking down check-in desk)  
  • Staff LocalShops1 booth, 5-10 hours/month: Time varies depending on the event (community festivals, local fundraisers, and other events. This may include setup and breakdown of tent, taking photos of people who stop at our booth, giving out information about LocalShops1, and selling LocalShops1 merchandise.
 

Work Environment
Many duties may be performed from home during regular business hours, but the membership director also is expected to hold office hours in our Gulfport office, and also will be spending some time on the road, visiting member businesses primarily in/around St. Petersburg/southern Pinellas. Occasionally, work may take place in the evenings, weekends and/or holidays.

 


Schedule + Compensation
Hours vary, and pay is primarily commission-based on independent contractor basis. Some projects may also include hourly pay. The membership director is also eligible for generous monthly bonuses.
