Limbo Chihuahuas, a Gulfport-based 501c3 non-profit founded in 2009, focuses on rescuing and rehabilitating chihuahuas and chihuahua mixes, many coming from shelters that would euthanize them otherwise. The all-volunteer group run by Mary Megan Barrett takes in the neediest dogs, including those with severe medical or behavioral issues and those that experienced severe abuse or neglect.

From their application for Best Non-Profit:

"Limbo Chihuahuas Rescue is an all-volunteer group made up of individuals that believe in the power of community and volunteering. After all, when you foster a dog or dogs you are volunteering 24/7. Every dog saved, every person who is educated on rescue, adoption, spay, neuter, dog mills, etc. changes the fabric of the community that we live in. If we do not do it , no one will. ...  When you rescue dogs it is a lifestyle and life-changing decision not to be taken lightly! Not everyone can do this and not everyone will - we will just keep on trying to affect the decisions some folks make for the better."
