Here are some interesting stories we came across for the week ending Aug. 12:

Make Your Startup Look Bigger
The premise here is that bigger is better, and though we don't personally agree with that, we concede that that's a common misconception. So what can a small business do to compete? Fake it. Give the illusion of bigger with 800 numbers, multiple email addresses, invest in a professionally designed website. And if you work in your pajamas out of your kitchen table? No one needs to know.

What to Look for in Your Startup's First Hire
Humility, like-mindedness, creativity, trustworthiness and passion might all be more important than actual skill sets, a panel of successful young entrepreneurs say.
"An Oscar on a previous film does not mean someone is right for my project, and your potential employees are no different," one entrepreneur says. "In order to determine if the connection is there, you must clearly illustrate the vision of your company and the guiding principles that will take you there."

No time to sleep? You may want to reconsider
We know how it is, when you run your own business, there's never enough time in the day to do everything. Afterall, you may be the president and CEO, but very likely you're also the bookkeeper, the marketing guy, the salesperson and the janitor. So the workday doesn't end when the eight (or 10 or 12) hours are up. But a new study shows that you might be better off putting some tasks off until you get a good night's sleep. Even if you don't feel tired, lack of sleep hampers job performance.
