Bringing About a New Economy

Posted By LocalShops1, Tuesday, December 20, 2016

The Buy Local movement is growing stronger and stronger every day, and of course every purchasing decision makes a positive impact. But to make profound change what is needed is to change the underlying policies and focus on pro-small business legislation, says Stacy Mitchell, co-director of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance. What we need are new initiatives to fund local businesses, give more funds to local farmers, limit banks' abilities to expand beyond state lines, close loopholes that help only corporations.

The resurgence of support for small farms, local businesses, and community banks is "remarkable," she explains, "but unlikely to amount to more than a small sideshow on the margins of the mainstream if the only way we can conceive of confronting corporate power and bringing about a new economy is through our buying decisions.

"What we really need to do is change the underlying policies that shape our economy. We can’t do that through the sum of our individual behavior in the marketplace. We can only do it by exercising our collective power as citizens.”

This TEDx talk was delivered in 2012, but its message still applies today.
