The Getaway Opening Second Location in St. Petersburg

Posted By LocalShops1, Thursday, March 16, 2017

There's a new restaurant coming to St. Petersburg, and this one is sure to be an instant hit. The Getaway, a waterfront tiki bar along Gandy Boulevard, is planning a second location in Maximo Marina, in south St. Petersburg's Skyway Marina district,

The restaurant is a huge boost to the marina, 4801 37th St. S, which is undergoing a $20 million renovation.

"I think every person who grew up in the area like myself knows people who have or had their boats at Maximo," Dave Burton, who owns The Getaway with Scott and Karina Tashkin, told the Tampa Bay Business Journal "The opportunity to be a player in its facelift was too good to pass up."

Posted By LocalShops1, Thursday, March 16, 2017

Nook & Cranny in Pinellas Park was named the Pinellas Park/Gateway Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business of the Year, reported the Pinellas Park Beacon.

The shop, at 10360 U.S. 19, is run by Tiffany Hausdorf and her mother, Marsha Patterson, and gives do-it-yourself craft workshops every day of the week and several per day on weekends. Workshops, depending on the project, run $45 to $75; children’s workshops are also available for $25-$35.

5,500+ Pounds of Food Collected For Domestic Violence Survivors

Posted By LocalShops1, Wednesday, March 15, 2017
Updated: Thursday, March 16, 2017

March 14, 2017, St. Petersburg, FL – CASA (Community Action Stops Abuse) held its second annual “Soup-er Bowl Food Drive for a Safe Home” in January and February 2017 to collect non-perishable food for domestic violence survivors in need. What happened when the Tampa Bay community learned about this initiative was amazing.

CASA carries a great responsibility on its shoulders. As the official domestic violence center for southern Pinellas County, Florida, it is a vital safety net for people either trapped in abusive relationships or dealing with the hardships, trauma and danger that may exist even after leaving an abuser. Many people in these difficult situations, including more than 100 children and adults living in CASA’s domestic violence shelter, rely on short-term assistance from CASA to provide nutritious meals for their family.

It is not hard to imagine how incredibly expensive providing for all those people can be. Seeing this difficulty, the generous Tampa Bay community banded together to support CASA’s Soup-er Bowl Food Drive. The result? More than 50 organizations volunteered to help, eventually filling over 200 large boxes with food! They collected enough non-perishable food estimated to last CASA’s domestic violence shelter five full months.

CASA acknowledges the many participating organizations listed below for their tremendous efforts. Among the most generous were CASA’s Soup-er Bowl 2017 sponsors Bare Board Group, Rotary International and media sponsor Tampa Bay Times. Major supporters included Allen Collins Realty, Eagle Asset Management, H&R Block, Pinellas County “Volunteers in Pinellas,” Raymond James, SPC Women on the Way, UF/IFAS Extension Family Nutrition Program, United Way Suncoast and West Pharmaceutical Services.

Of the 50+ supporting organizations, which was the very top contributor of food and volunteers? By CASA’s final count, the 2017 CASA Soup-er Bowl MVP is the Raymond James/Eagle Asset Management team led by Sheila King and Carrie Gill.

“Everyone involved has made a huge difference to survivors of domestic violence with their donation of time, food, money and effort,” said John Biesinger, CASA’s Manager of Major Gifts. “Along with all the parents and kids who are enjoying the ‘food security’ they provided, we thank our supporters for their generosity and enthusiasm.”

This year marks CASA’s 40th anniversary serving the community. To learn about CASA’s programs and initiatives, visit www.casa-stpete.org, email info@casa-stpete.org or call 727-895-4912.

Pier Public Art Project

Posted By LocalShops1, Wednesday, March 8, 2017

Artists experienced with 3D public art are invited to be considered by the city for commissions for the St. Petersburg Pier project. Almost half a million dollars is available for two commissions, and only artists that have completed work of similar scope, scale and budget range will be considered.

Here are more details from the city:

About Public Art for the Pier District
Public art will offer an important element and experience to park visitors. It will help to communicate the contemporary point of view of the design. The art will be compatible with the goal of engaging the public in a multitude of ways. It may evoke a range of reactions from moods of contemplation to celebration.  At least one commission will be selected to help establish the Pier District as an important community gathering space - representative of St. Petersburg's emergence as one of the most beautiful, creative and vibrant cities in Florida.

About the Process
  • The City of St Petersburg has a Public Art Ordinance that is being followed for this selection
  • Per the ordinance, a committee comprised of artists, architects, members of the Public Art Commission, curators and other stakeholders, including residents, has been created to coordinate this process.
  • The Committee's goal is a short list of pre-qualified artists for a minimum of two commissions.
  • The committee is following a process recommended as "best practices" by the Americans for the Arts organization. Committee work is transparent and fair, as established by Florida Sunshine laws. All work is conducted at scheduled meetings that are open to the public.
  • The committee is just beginning the selection process. No art or artist has been, or will be, pre-selected.
  • Design honoraria scaled to project budget, will be offered to a limited number of artists.
To be considered for the pre-qualified artists pool, go to newstpetepier.com/art.php
